Highlights/ Sample of Coursework:
This course gave me practical knowledge on how a library develops and maintains a collection. I looked at the services provided by different vendors. Also, I read book lists before recommending books to an imagined school library. I learned what needs to be addressed in a contract with a vendor. I reviewed a library collection and determined which books I thought should stay and which ones should be replaced. This was the first time that I had been introduced to the idea of outsourcing library tasks.
- Unit 1 Assignment: Collection Development Policy Analysis
- Unit 2 Assignment: Selecting a Vendor for a Fictional Midwest Library (For this assignment, the professor gave the class a description of a fictional library in the midwest and asked that we select a vendor that would be appropriate to supply that new library with a collection.)
- Unit 4 Assignment: A Search for Specialized Publishers
- Final Paper: Gardening Books at the Tolland (CT) Public Library (This is only an exercise, it had no impact on the library collection. Only part of the collection was considered.)
